I was using Martin Cowl s’ al c o h o l f l avo u r i n g s s u c h a s

to o. I used them quite a lo t , an d I d i d re al ly we l l o n t h o s e . T h e

a n d making it more afford ab l e fo r us to f i s h w i t h . S o t h a t wa s
my first really good boili e t ha t I co ul d u s e i n b u lk . Yo u c o u l d
p u t a couple of kilos out wi t h o u t ge t ti n g a m o r tga ge .
Then I sort of bumped i n to s o me o f t he P re m i er B a i t g uys
a round ‘86/’87. They were ju s t st a rt i n g o ut , a n d i n th o s e d ays ,
i t was Phil and Geoff. Then I g o t i n to swa p p i n g a lo t o f my m i l k
p roteins. We still carried o n u s i n g t h e S lu i s a n d so m e o f t h e
m i lk proteins, but then we s t ar te d u si n g f i s hm e a l s , wh i c h we re
a gain a lot cheaper, so you c o u ld u s e a l o t m o re . Yo u c o u l d ba i t
t h e swims more heavi ly, h o l di ng th e f i s h a n d p u l l i ng t h e f i s h
i n to your swim. We starte d u s i n g b le n d s o f f i s h me a l s w i t h
m i lk proteins with the Slu i s , an d we s taye d a l o n g th o s e t y p e
o f lines.
I t’s not a lot different to wh at we a re d o i n g to d ay w i t h
U rban Bait; we have been c a rr y i ng o n wi th t h i s s o rt o f t h i n g

p e ople using boilies. T his wo u ld have b e en o n L a ke M e a d ows
i n Essex where a lot of th e i n n ova to r s o f ca rp f i s h i n g s t a te d
o u t , and the South Weald lo t a n d Ha i n au l t Fo re s t . I wa s l u c k i ly
e n ough that I grew up in an e ra wh ere we h a d to m ake o u r ow n
c a rp baits. It wasn’t until l a te r t h at Ri c hwo rt h c ame o u t; t h e re
was none of that , an d lite ra lly yo u h a d to g o a n d b uy a s e t o f
i n gredient s, mix them you r s el f , a n d i t wa s t h e o l d s ay i n g –
s u ck it and see. That’s why we wo u ld tu r n u p a t a l a ke w i t h
t h ree or four different ba i ts , as yo u wo u ld u s e t h re e o r fo u r
