Last season was my f i r s t
y e ar on Dinton, so I was v e r y
m uch ‘learning the rop es’ a s
i t were,especially as I o n l y
m anaged to get 16 nig h t s
u n der my belt. I was s t i l l
l u cky enough to catch a f e w
f r om White Swan, but noth i n g
b i gger than 30lb, and th e f e w
f o r ays across to Black S wa n ,
l e a r n ! B a se d o n l a s t s e a s o n ’s
findings, water clarity can be
an issue at most times of the
y e a r, s o l e a r n i n g s p o t s e a r l y,
for when the algae starts to
b l o o m a n d t h e w e e d g ro w t h
b e g i n s i s k e y. I h a v e l e a r n e d
not to become despondent, and
j u st v i e w a n y b l a n k s e s s i o n a s
a p a r t o f t h e l e a r n i n g c u r v e,
t h e larger of the two wat e r s ,
w ere ultimately fruitl ess . I ’ m
u n der no illusion that the t i m e

Early this spring I deci d e d
t o target Black Swan . T h e
s t ock in there is pheno me n a l ,
u p there with the very bes t i n
t h e country, but after a f e w
s e ssions I once again c a m e
a way empty-handed - on su c h
a big wat er there’s a l o t t o
and instead focus on sussing
out each swim as best I can,
in itself a frustrating act, as
you can never do too much
i n t h e wa y o f p o k i n g a b o u t ,
s e a r c h i n g, a n d f e a t u r e f i nd i n g,
w h e n y o u ’r e f i x a t i n g o n
keeping disturbance to a
minimum in an effort to snare
y o u r f i rs t f i sh ! I t w i l l h a p p e n
f o r m e o n t h e r e, I ’ m s u r e o f i t ,
i t ’s j u s t a m a t t e r o f w h e n . . .
E a r l i e r i n t h e y e a r, I h a d
b o o k e d so m e t i m e o f f w o r k ,
to coincide with the first
Bank Holiday weekend of the
month, and decided to head
back to White Swan.A Lake
