Sitting set up in a swim a t t h e b e g i n n i n g o f t h e s e s s i o n i s a
wonderful feeling. I was f u ll o f a n ti c i p a t i o n a n d ex p ec t a t i o n !
T h e late Keith Cooper was d ow n fo r a wa n de r a n d s c ro u n g e d
a brew. At 7.30pm on the d o t , t he l o n g c hu c k l ef t h a n d ro d
was away and immediately ki te d le f t to t h e we e d b e d. T h e f i s h
fe lt good, if there is such a fe el i n g , b u t I wa s a l i t t l e a gh a s t
when, with the fish wallow i n g o n t he s u r fa c e s o m e t we n t y
ya rds out , the hook pulled ! A s a c o n s o l at i o n , t h e cl o s e r ri gh t
h a nd rod produced a mid-d o u b le c o mm o n s o m e t h i rt y m i n u te s
l a ter. With that , I topp ed u p th e sw i m w i th a fe w p o u c h e s o f
t i gers and baits and settled i n fo r t h e n i gh t a h e a d , h a p py a n d
f u ll of confidence that the re wa s m o re a c t i on to c o m e . A l o s t
f i s h at 10pm and then ano t h er at 2 am , h oweve r, c a u s ed m e to
s t art worr ying about my ri g s , s o I wa s u p e a rly to re eval u a te
t h e situation. Another sca t te r i n g o f b a i t we n t i n to t h e sw i m ,
fo llowed by a ‘BB weighted dow n’ sq u i d a n d oc to p u s p o p - u p o n
t h e left-hand rod, and the n a s h o r te r h o o k l i n k o n th e l o n g e r
ro d completed my n ew app ro a c h.
The changes worked we ll ! I wa s ke p t b u sy th ro u gh o u t th e
d ay, catching carp and ad d i n g b a i t to t h e sw i m . T h re e m o re
m i d doubles followed unti l a t 1 .2 0 p m, I l an d e d t h e f i r s t t we n t y
o f the session, a mirror t ha t I ’d c au gh t p rev i o u s ly a n d wa s
p reviously my first ever f i s h f ro m t he t h i rd l a ke . A f te r th i s
c a tch, it was evident , and p e rh ap s b li nd i n gly o bv i ou s to s o me ,
t h at the fish were really o n t he ba i t ; th e l e f t - h a nd s to r m p o l e
was being knocked aroun d al l ove r t he p l ac e a s f i s h v is i te d
t h eir new feature. Within t he n ex t th re e h o u r s , fo u r mo re
t a kes followed on the left h a nd ro d w i th t he b e s t fi s h b ei n g a
n i ce twenty common. The t ake s j us t ke p t o n c o m i n g , an d by
