complex for many years; it was
always one of those waters
that I had intended to fish but
never actually got around to.

Having secured my ticket
for the Big Lake and knowing
virtually nothing about it, I
decided to start to find out
everything that I could about
the place; this was when
my eyes where first opened.
The consensus from people
There was a fish that would
come up in the angling press
f r o m t i m e t o t i m e, w h i c h
was an absolute pearler of
a mirror carp, a real fish of
l i f e t i m e, a g e n u i n e b a n g e r
and I wanted it! The fish in
question was an old English
mid-40 mirror called “The big
l i n ” b u t i n t h i s f i s h ’s i n s t a n c e
– the weight was very much
irrelevant as its colours,
scale pattern and general
proportions where off the
charts. Having decided that
I needed to catch this mega
fish I finally enquired about a
ticket; I was expecting to be
greeted with the old waiting
list mumbo jumbo but instead
t h a t a r e i n t h e k n o w, w a s
that the old big linear that I
w a n t e d s o b a d, h a d p r o b a b l y
escaped during heavy floods,
a s i t h a d n ’t b e e n c a u g h t i n
around 5 years or so. That
n e w s I n i t i a l l y, c r u s h e d m e
but I was also made aware of
another linear that resided
w i t h i n t h e E c t o n B i g l a k e,
equally as desirable as the
big lin except this fish was
ironically called the little
l i n e a r. A m i d 4 0 m i r r o r t h a t ’s
l o n g, l e a n , d a r k a n d s c a l e y
which was more than likely
t o b e o l d e r t h a n m e, t h i s
fish ticked all the boxes and
that fire that was almost
extinguished was now very
