36 hours, we both blanked. I was getting my head round
thinking my first blank was imminent , but then the middle
rod burst into life. I was out like a shot , but unfortunately it
came off. As I was reeling in the rig, the right rod went off,
and straight away I knew this was a good fish. After a few
hairy moments, it was in the net . I gazed in with my mate
Carl, and we both knew it was well over 40Ib. I’d had one of
t h e a b s o l u t e g e m s o f t h e l a k e , t h e ‘ L o n g S u t t o n’. S h e w e n t
4 2 I b 8 o z , a n d r e s i d e n t p h o t o g r a p h e r, R u p e r t , c a m e o v e r t o
take some fantastic shots. It took ages to get the rods back
a f t e r a l l t h e e xc i t e m e n t , b u t s p e a k i n g t o f r i e n d s a b o u t w h a t
had just happened, I was on cloud nine! I caught another
m i d - 2 0 c o m m o n a n d w e n t h o m e a l r e a dy t h i n k i n g a b o u t m y
next trip.
I was back a week later and had three more nights at my
d i s p o s a l . L u c k i l y Tu r f s w a s f r e e , s o I w a s t e d n o t i m e s e n d i n g
out 60 Spombs of bait and getting the rods out. The rods
w e r e b a r e l y o u t t w o h o u r s w h e n t h e l e f t h a n d r o d w a s a w a y,
and after a good fight , one of the Redmire commons was in
the net , and at 35Ib 6oz, I was buzzing. I got the pictures
done and released it . The night was quiet , but by first light ,
I ’ d h a d s o m e s a va g e l i n e r s s o k n e w t h e f i s h w e r e o n t h e
f e e d . M y f r i e n d C a r l h a d a r r iv e d , a n d h e d o u b l e d u p w i t h m e
again. By late morning, I’d had three stockie 20s, and then
i t w e n t m a d … I ’ d g o t a 3 0 i n t h e n e t a n d t w o o f Wr a y s b u r y ’ s
f i n e s t i n t h e r e t a i n e r s , o n e c a l l e d ‘ P a w p r i n t ’, s p a w n e d o u t a t
37Ib 12oz, and another rare Redmire common at 37Ib 2oz.
