Spring – In spring I always lo o k fo r t re e c ove r a n d s h a l lowe r
water in close proximity to t h e wi n te r h o l d i n g s p o t s . T h e s e
w i ll be the first spots to be v i si te d a f te r t he lo ng h a r s h w i n te r,
a s the carp seek out the wa r m rays o f th e sp ri n g s un s h i n e , b u t
t h ey will prefer some sort o f c ove r to fe el c o n f i d e n t . I k n ow
o f an area that lies abo ut 2 0 0 yd s u p f ro m a m ari n a t h at h a s
a l arge overhanging tree a n d i s 3 f t s ha l lowe r th a n t h e re s t o f
t h at stretch, and it is here wh ere I wi l l v i s it i n t h e s p ri n g to
c a tch a canal monster or two ! In fa ct I h ave t a ke n s eve ra l 2 0 s
f rom this spot!
Summer : Look for the d e ad a r ms / q ui e t a re a s , a s t h e c a rp
w i ll pack into these areas to re st u p an d g e t o u t t h e way o f t h e
b u sy boat traffic. I have fou n d u p to 3 0 c ar p in a n a r m n o m o re
t h an 10yds wide and 3 0yd s l o n g . He re t h e wa te r w i l l b e s t i l l
a n d perfect for a bit of flo a te r f i s h i n g .
Overhanging trees are a ls o a n o th e r favo uri te h a u n t o f t h e
c a rp in summer, and a bait p l ac e d c lo se to th e s e s ta n d s a g o o d
c h ance of being taken. Esp e ci a l ly lo o k fo r st re tc h e s t h a t h ave
l a rge areas of no cover or fe at u re s a n d h a s o n ly o n e t re e o n i t s
